This large bamboo motif relief molded ceramic pitcher was made in the first half of the 19th century by English pottery W. Ridgway & Co. of Hanley. The piece has a tankard-like shape with a wide base providing stability and features vertical jointed bamboo stalks bound together by horizontal pieces of rope. The pitcher's applied handle has an arched form and carries on the rope theme by appearing to consist of four pieces of rope which have been twisted together.
The pitcher is in very good antique condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. That said, it should be noted that there are minor anomalies present commonly found in antique pottery, including minor glaze skips and pops, as well as flecks of material caught in the glaze itself. These irregularities are mentioned for accuracy and do not detract from the appearance or function of the pitcher.
This useful pitcher displays beautifully and would be a great addition to a collection of antique English pottery. It is ready to be pressed into service at the table, or could also be used as an unusual vase. A pretty and practical antique find!
